Marianas ecosystem science workshop

Marianas Trench Marine National Monument and Marianas Archipelago Ecosystem Science Implementation Workshop

May 21-22, 2013  Saipan!

NOAA Fisheries Pacific Islands Region, in coordination with natural
resource agencies from the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana
Islands (CNMI) and Guam, is convening a 2-day ecosystem science
implementation workshop in Garapan, Saipan.

This workshop will focus on formulating a five-year (2014 -2019) research implementation strategy to address knowledge gaps identified in the Marianas Trench Marine National Monument (MTMNM) Ecosystem Science Plan and contribute to existing baseline data on the linkages between biological, geophysical, and human components of the MTMNM and the Marianas Archipelago Ecosystem. The discussion will focus on the islands, shallow reefs, and banks of the Mariana Archipelago, including the area of the MTNMN referred to as the ‘Islands Unit.’ Future workshops will explore other aspects of the Mariana Ecosystem, including the Mariana Trench and submarine volcanoes.

Scientists, educators, natural resources specialists, non-governmental entities involved in ocean science, archaeologists, and interested members of the community are invited.
